The Byrds (CD2, Tk2)
Eight Miles High (1965)
Roger McGuinn, vocals and 12-string guitar; David Crosby, vocals and guitar; Chris Hillman, vocals and bass; Gene Clark, vocals; Michael Clarke, drums.
This is an example of acid rock, which was a kind of psychedelic music in the 1960s. One musical element is that it has a strong trance quality to it. There is really only a single two-line melody that is repeated six times. The song has 12 lines of text. The instrumental sections around the singing are more representative of this trance-like style.
The Byrds were using drugs at this time, and the song is commonly considered to be about one of their trips. It was denied, however, no doubt to make sure they would get some air time.
